Prime Minister Robert Abela comes out against European defence spending and accuses Roberta Metsola of being a warmonger

It has been more than forty years since Malta’s main political parties disagreed on fundamental issues of national security. Never in our history has a political party used national security issues as cheap, popular, and deceiving talking points for electoral ends.

Yesterday, at Bormla’s Realto, Robert Abela came out strongly against European defence spending and accused Roberta Metsola of being a warmonger. Metsola was right when she described Labour as dangerous because these are the talking points that the Kremlin wants to sell to European politicians.ย  Labour MEPs seem to have already received the memo and this will be a talking point of their campaign. This is the first time in our history that such a serious discussion relating to our national security is being used in a deceiving way that can only serve foreign interests. Not even Joseph Muscat stooped at these lows. Imagine the Labour Party in Opposition during Lawrence Gonzi’s administration accusing it of warmongering as it allowed the French services to aid the Libyan revolutionaries with telecommunications, or when the government accepted the Libyan deserters who flew in with their fighter jets.

These are serious discussions that should be made with maturity but we can forget that we’ll be having any of that. Robert Abela gave an hour-long speech that sounded like an unhinged Orwellian diatribe of a drunken village warlord, blaming “the establishment” of having a conspiracy against the people, accusing his critics of wanting to hurt his supporters, all the while claiming that Malta’s economy is depending on his great benevolence and his altruistic will to work for the people. The half-man-half-child couldn’t be more criminal if he took any more breaths. Maybe, we should be reminded of the time when Robert Abela was in business with Russian oligarchs over Maltese passports.

  1. This is a man who grew up with a silver spoon up his arse, never had to fight for anything and who thinks that being strong means puffing yourself up in the gym. If anyone wants to kid themselves for one moment that we will sail through untouched while the world burns, up to them. I would prefer that we start thinking bad thoughts in order to be prepared.

  2. […] Michelle Muscat has endorsed Labour MEP candidate Daniel Attard, saying he has served as “a shield” to her and her family. She sounds and looks like the wife of a mobster (Carmela comes to my mind, but I would assume that Michelle is less cultured) and with her husband riding around the island in a Maserati they seem to be quite in character. On the other hand, the Labour Party’s campaign for the European Parliament elections seems to be run as a criminal operation, focused mainly on the defense of organised crime for the sake of “patriotism” and the “national interest” while Labour compromises our actual national interests by attacking our collective European security interests. 12. […] In today’s rendition of Labour Party politics resembling fascism and mafia-style politics, Alex Agius Saliba delivered a 15-minute diatribe against the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, before making a strong statement against abortion rights. Supposedly, Alex Agius Saliba is part of the “socialists and progressives” in the European Parliament or simply the S&D. Then came Dear Leader who lied once again lied about Opposition candidates on wanting to send “our Maltese children to fight other people’s wars” in another statement against European defense and security.
