A Stasi-like attack against the Ex-Chief Justice

Earlier this week in Parliament, the Justice Minister presented a document containing a long list of critical quotes against the Labour government by former Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri. The surprising, Stasi-like attack appeared to be a response to the Chief Justice’s criticism of the government’s proposed reform on Magisterial Inquiries.

According to the ex-Chief Justice, the government’s reform on Magisterial Inquiries is only intended to shield politicians from investigations. We all know this, except for the Chamber of Commerce), but it’s significant that this acknowledgement comes from the Judiciary itself. It is also problematic that the Judiciary feels compelled to remain silent as its independence is curtailed, but the voices of retired Judges are undoubtedly a reflection of the thoughts of many in the Judiciary right now.

The Justice Minister’s behaviour in Parliament follows another recent incident where he lashed out against journalists along with his Labour colleagues. These scenes reminded me of the Georgian Parliament just before the opposition boycotted it entirely after the ruling party rigged the elections.

Labour is using Parliament to fight against what remains of the state and civil society that it has yet to capture. We are watching in real-time a bunch of criminal serfs turning Parliament into an authoritarian circus.
