During yesterday’s address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEP and PN Head of Delegation David Casa expressed serious concern about increasing threats against activists and journalists in the European Union. He declared that the deterioration of the rule of law, coupled with the inability of the EU to act decisively, has created an environment of violence against the individuals who are keeping criminals accountable.
“Violence against journalists is no accident. When someone believes that they can kill a journalist with impunity, it means criminals have faith in a corrupt system that guarantees their impunity. That system is still unaddressed,” Casa stated.
Casa spoke out on Wednesday in a commemorative debate honouring the late Slovak journalist Jรกn Kuciak, killed in 2018 while researching a corruption scandal. He contrasted this with the latest incidents in Malta, highlighting a growing trend of intimidatory tactics comparable to the harassment experienced by investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia prior to her own assassination in 2017.
