The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has officially registered as a union after being granted a last-minute approval by the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER). It is a historic step for the institution, which has beea key advocate for press freedom and journalistic standards since its establishment in 1989.
The move to become a union was voted in at the IĠM’s Annual General Meeting of 2024. With yesterday’s approval, the institute will now take on its expanded mission to also regulate the relationship between media professionals and their employers, as well as its continued work to protect press freedom and professional ethics.
Originally founded as The Malta Press Club, the IĠM rebranded in 2004 to better reflect its evolving role in the media landscape. Now, 35 years after its inception, it enters a new chapter, aiming to provide stronger representation for journalists in employment-related matters.
In a statement, the IĠM expressed gratitude to both current and former members who contributed to this milestone and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting journalists in Malta.
