Malta team kicks off UEFA Women’s Nations League challenge

The Malta Women’s National Team kicks off their UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign later today against Cyprus, eager to make a strong statement. With rigorous preparations and growing enthusiasm for women’s football in Malta, the team is set for the challenge under Coach Manuela Tesse.

Coach Manuela Tesse optimistic and excited for tomorrow’s kick-off

Tesse, optimistic about the match, acknowledges the team’s progress since their last competitive game against Portugal seven months ago. “We’ve seen significant improvement, particularly in the players’ confidence,” she said. “We know what we’ve built and achieved in the last Nations League edition. Tomorrow, we must start with composure and confidence in our strength. The game is long—we play 90 plus minutes—and we must stay focused.”

She highlighted the team’s mental growth, balancing confidence with humility. “Players are fighting for a place in the starting 11, but success depends on the entire squad being ready. The new players bring fresh energy, passion for Malta, and different football cultures, which help us grow as a team.”

Captain Lipman confident ahead of opener

Team captain Emma Lipman echoed Tesse’s optimism, emphasising the squad’s increased experience. “We have a clear objective, just like two years ago, but now with more experience. It won’t be an easy game, and we can’t be naïve. We must be prepared.”

Lipman also welcomed the squad’s new additions, including Oceane Grange, Fiona Buttigieg, and Jana Barbara, who all earned their first national call-up. “It’s great to see new players come in. As captain, I want to help them integrate, and it’s fantastic to see the federation investing in our growth. A strong team dynamic is key, and everyone’s contribution matters.”

With a mix of experience and fresh talent, Malta’s women’s team is determined to perform well and secure a strong start in the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

Malta’s match against Cyprus at the AEK Arena in Larnaca on Friday 21st February 2025, which kicks off at 18:00hrs, will be broadcast live on TVMSport+
