Regular traffic checks continued during the weekend as officials expected more vehicles on the roads, especially towards Gozo, because of Carnival celebrations.
Road checks were carried out in several areas over the last three days, including Għadira Bay and Gozo, where around 600 vehicles were stopped and inspected for possible irregularities.
Though the vast majority of drivers proved to be compliant with traffic regulations, police issued 37 fines. These were offenses such as driving with an invalid license, using a mobile phone while driving, and vehicles without a displayed license sticker on the windscreen. Besides this, eight criminal charges were filed.
Enforcement of speed was also among the areas checked for, leading to about 20 fines for over-speeding.
Officials have confirmed that such regular checks will continue in the coming days and weeks to ensure road safety.
