The Maltese Herald has confirmed that Hungarian troops have already replaced French troops in northern Chad. The reports are verified by various diplomatic sources and eyewitness reports.
Hungarian troops took part in an exercise by the Chadian Army in coordination with the Libyan National Army over border demarcations, including the part of the border where Chad, Libya and Sudan meet. The Chadian Army is also coordinating with the genocidal Rapid Support Forces over border demarcations with Sudan. Hungarian troops were seen coordinating along the Chadian border with the Chadian Army. Hungarian troops were also seen being driven out of the previous French base in Faya-Largeu in the north of Chad. Hungarian troops were identified after bearing the Hungarian flags on Toyota pick-up trucks, but they also distinguish themselves for being White.
The Hungarian Parliament has already approved the deployment of Hungarian troops in Chad on the pretext of anti-terrorism operations with the Chadian Army. The latest official statements by the Hungarian government and President Viktor Orban in the Hungarian press on this initiative state that Hungarian troops are yet to be deployed in Chad, but these statements don’t actually reflect the reality that Hungarian troops are already in Chad conducting operations with the Chadian Army.

There’s controversy in Hungary about Hungary’s military presence in Africa because there’s mystery behind the mission of Hungarian troops in Africa. The Hungarian government says that the mission is about combating terrorism, but it is strange that Chad would need Hungarian troops for this purpose.
Chad is not short of soldiers. Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno recently travelled to Burkina Faso with a contingent of soldiers and pledged readiness to send Chadian troops to Congo to help quell the M23 rebellion. Earlier this year Chadian troops were also involved in a successful operation against Boko Haram in the south of the country.
Last year, the Chadian President made a surprise announcement ordering French troops to leave Chad as soon as possible. Up to 1,000 French troops who provided training and technical support to the Chadian Army had to withdraw from their bases in Chad leaving behind them many questions as to why the Chadian President wanted their exit so quickly. Relationships between France and Chad turned cold following the exit process.
In a surprise visit to Paris last week, Khalifa Haftar met with French President Emmanuel Macron. The French President didn’t comment or make a statement about the meeting. Khalifa Haftar visited Belarus a week earlier where some of his troops are conducting training with the Belarusian special forces. This was the first time that Haftar had visited Paris since his botched attack on Tripoli in 2020.
The presence of Hungarian troops in Chad is a serious concern for some diplomatic circles in Europe, raising fears that Hungary is conducting military operations behind Europe’s back. The French government is also reportedly taking an active interest in this development.
