Recent press reports have confirmed that the Chadian government is cooperating with the genocidal Rapid Support Forces on security over the Chadian and Sudanese border. The Chadian government has cited livestock smuggling concerns for this cooperation, however the Chadian government is also facilitating the transfer of weapons by the United Arab Emirates to the RSF through its airports in the east such as from Amdjarass.
Chad also hosts more than 700,000 Sudanese refugees who mainly fled the Sudanese Darfur region where the RSF is known to have committed many atrocities. Many members of the RSF are also Chadian nationals.
The Chadian government’s rhetoric against the Sudanese government and its armed forces has been escalating recently, as the Sudanese Armed Forces continue to make territorial gains against the Rapid Support Forces. The Chadian pro-government press is running fake stories about the Sudanese Armed Forces, while Chadian army officers and pro-government influencers are increasingly publishing messages and videos on their social media accounts condemning the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Recently, the Chadian Army cooperated with Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) on border demarcations. Both armies were also seen along the Sudanese border where their territories converge. The LNA has smuggled Toyota trucks from Libya to Sudan for the RSF and has also sent its troops to support the RSF in the fighting. Both Chad and Khalifa Haftar are allies of the UAE.
Last month in Chad an incident happened in front of the Presidential palace where dozens of people were shot and killed by the Presidential Guard. The government’s version of events is that the event was an attack against the President. Local press reports have however reported that it was an accident with the government trying to pin the blame on ethnic groups from the South of the country. No one declared responsibility for the supposed attack against the Presidential palace.
