The Rapid Support Forces militias (formerly the Janjaweed) in Sudan launched an attack on Al-Fashir city in Darfur at the end of the last week, targeting schools, hospitals, and other civilian buildings in the process. Last December, backed by Wagner Group paramilitaries, the RSF broke the ceasefire agreement with the Sudanese government and reignited the war in Darfur. The attack on Al-Fashir was repelled by local fighters and the Sudanese army.
Among the dead RSF fighters at Al-Fashir, at least two tags issued by the Libyan National Army were found. Chadian warlord Mahdi Bashir was also killed among the RSF. Mahdi Bashir was involved in the 2021 Chadian rebellion that killed the then Chadian President Idriss Deby.
Meanwhile, some reports state that the RSF militia are currently massacring civilians in the village of Jalangy in the rural Sennar State.
Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) has been a significant supporter of the RSF militias in Sudan. The RSF, previously the Janjaweed militias, were responsible for widespread atrocities including ethnic cleansing, mass rape and the displacement of millions of people, mostly of non-Arabic Black indigenous groups.
Khalifa Haftar is currently augmenting his forces at Libya’s Western and Southern borders as he threatens the Tripoli government with war.
