A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity in Tripoli, has condemned Khalifa Haftar’s invasion of Sudan. Specifically, the statement said that it “strongly condemns and rejects any attempt to drag the people of Libya into actions that could destabilise the security and stability of neighboring countries or involve them in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.”
As of last week, Khalifa Haftar’s forces started an invasion of the Sudanese border with Libya and Egypt. On Tuesday, Haftar,’s forces began a widescale incursion of Sudanese border posts in the Libya-Egypt-Sudan triangle. The attacks by Khalifa Haftar’s forces and allied Libyan militias are being conducted in systematic coordination with the Rapid Support Forces: Sudan’s genocidal militia.
In a separate statement, the government of Khalifa Haftar said that the media is exaggerating the stories about its activities in Sudan and that the Libyan National Army (Khalifa Haftar’s forces) is not allied with the the RSF. The videos spread on social media showing preparations for the invasion of Sudan were circulated by Khalifa Haftar’s own propagandists. The same military trucks in Haftar’s propaganda video are then also seen driving in the desert and fighting with the Sudanese forces, and later on his forces are also seen embracing and hugging members of the RSF.
The coordination and support between Haftar’s forces and the RSF is well documented and also well-known by the Sudanese military units fighting in the north of the country. Military officials from the Libyan National Army have been present in Sudan as of last year.
Both sides took prisoners in the ongoing war and Khalifa Haftar’s forces are also claiming to have occupied several border posts previously administered by the Sudanese military.
