Khalifa Haftar starts a border war against Sudan

A large military convoy of the Libyan forces of Khalifa Haftar have engaged the Sudanese Army right on the Libyan border as of yesterday night. This is the third attack by the Khalifa Haftar’s forces against the official military of Sudan in a few days.

On June 7th the Libyan Sabal al-Salam Battalion, loyal to Haftar, entered 3 kilometers deep into the Sudanese border in the Jabal al-Uwaynat area, southeast of Kufra. The Sudanese military engaged with the Libyan battalion inside the Sudanese border, and also captured one of the Libyan vehicles.

Another attack in the border region of the Libya-Egypt-Sudan Triangle took place on June 10th by the Rapid Support Forces, allegedly with the help of Haftar’s forces.

Earlier this night, Haftar’s forces launched an attack on the Sudanese military. A video by Haftar’s forces with the military convoy en route to Sudan was distributed on social media before the attack took place.

Khalifa Haftar is an ally of the United Arab Emirates, which is engaging in desperate measures to fight back against the Sudanese government after the Sudanese Army made a series of successful military gains against the genocidal Rapid Support Forces. The UAE is conducting a proxy war against Sudan through the RSF which it funds and arms.

Khalifa Haftar used to tell foreign diplomats that he does not have full control of the Libyan border in the south, but is now using the same border, he allegedly has no control over, to conduct an invasion of a neighbouring country.

The southern Libyan borders, especially those near Kufra are areas with extensive trafficking activity of weapons, drugs, people and also gold and raw materials. Khalifa Haftar regularly delivers weapons to the RSF through the southern Libyan borders. In an exercise earlier this year, Chad, Hungary and Khalifa Haftar’s forces conducting a border demarcation exercise together.
