Doubts arise whether coup attempt actually took place in N’Djamena: local reports state that Presidential Guard fired on a bus of workers

AFP has reported that an attempted coup d’état took place on the Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno at his Presidential Palace in N’Djamena. Separate local reports from Chadian media are reporting a completely different story.

According to Chadian press sources, a group of agricultural workers were returning home with a bus. The bus broke down in front of the Presidential Palace. Frightened, the workers tried to get off the bus with their work tools, which included machetes, and started crossing the road towards the Presidential palace. Since the door of the bus opened towards the side of the presidency, the guards posted at the palace opened fire on them. The workers panicked and ran away when they heard gun-fire.

Up to twenty people have been reportedly killed. Photos and videos of the dead men clearly show them unarmed and dressed as civilians.

The government is now blaming Black Chadians from the South for the supposed attack, accusing them of attempting a coup d’état, increasing racial and divisive rhetoric.
