Canada is to retaliate against recently announced US tariffs on Canadian goods by an equivalent 25% tariff on an estimated $155 billion of US goods. In a press conference given yesterday, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the retaliatory tariffs along with Canada’s position on US relations.
US President Donald Trump started the weekend by imposing 25% tariffs on all manufactured Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy starting next Tuesday. President Trump also imposed 25% tariffs on Mexico and 10% tariffs on China.
Canada’s Prime Minister stated that the new tariffs goes against the free trade agreements signed with President Trump during his first administration and also remarked that it is not true that Canada is to blame for the US border and fentanyl crisis. He also claimed that less than 1% of illegal immigrants and fentanyl exports to the United States come from Canada. The Prime Minister also stated that although this course of action with tit for tat sanctions is not preferred, Canada needs to secure its interests.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also set to meet with Mexico’s newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum to coordinate the tariff response.
