Canada’s main political leaders are united behind Canada’s response to tariffs imposed on the Untied States on Canada that became effective as of today. The Untied States has imposed up to 25% tariffs on most Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy. Canada has responded with similar measures.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that President Donald Trump is fighting against the allies of the United States while appeasing the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, Canada’s Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre said that Canada will fight back against the newly imposed tariffs and the US economy will feel the repercussions in lost jobs and access to cheap raw materials. The Canadian Opposition Leader is also proposing an import-substitution campaign with regard to US products, and proposed cuts in taxes to ease the effect of US tariffs. He also said that Canada should increase its natural gas production to reduce dependency on Russian gas, while also rebuilding its military to ensure Canada’s security.
