Former Central Bank Governor Mark Carney was elected leader of the Liberal Party in Canada with a resounding 85% of the vote, defeating his opponent, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Mark Carney was Canada’s central banker from 2008 to 2013 and the UK’s central banker from 2013 to 2020 steering through two crisis: the financial crisis of 2008 and Brexit. He will soon be taking on Canada’s premiership from Justin Trudeau, who resigned earlier this year to give his party a better chance to win the elections. Mark Carney was born in Canada but also holds Irish and UK citizenship. He is a rare exception in history for having led two central banks in different countries.
Mark Carney has vowed a “Dollar for Dollar” trade war if President Trump continues his trade war with Canada. Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on the United States after the US put a 25% tariff on most of its products and 10% tariff on its energy. Mark Carney has also promised extensive financial aid to Canadian companies affected by U.S. tariffs, similar in scale and scope to the financial relief provided during the COVID crisis.
Canadian politicians have become more united over the US imposed tariffs and threats by President Donald Trump to annex Canada. Nationalism in Canada is also on the rise.
