Leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney, is set to become the Prime Minister of Canada as provisional results show the Liberal Party won yesterday’s federal elections of Canada. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned from the leadership of the Liberal Party as polls showed he was below his Opposition and Conservative opponent, Pierre Poilievre. Justin Trudeau’s resignation secured the election victory of his party after it swung upwards in the polls following his resignation and Mark Carney’s election as its leader.
Mark Carney, who previously served as the Governor of the Bank of England, has vowed to take a strong stance against President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada including vouching for “a Dollar-for-Dollar” reaction to President Trump’s trade war.
In his election victory speech, Mark Carney said that he will serve as a Prime Minister for all Canadians including those who preferred a different outcome for the election. He also spoke briefly in French and said that Quebec’s French culture remains at the heart of Canada’s national culture. Mark Carney also riled his supporters with ” We will build, baby build.”
On the United States, Carney said that Canada and the US enjoyed a strong and historical friendship and Canadians are now over the US betrayal. He reiterated that when speaking to President Trump, the conversation will be between two sovereign nations and that Canada has many options with whom it can build good relations.
The incoming Prime Minister said that “We need to think big and act bigger. Canada will need to do things previously thought impossible at speeds we haven’t seen in generations.” He added that Canada needs to build twice as many homes it build per year with Canadian workers, technology and lumber. “Canada needs to become an industrial and energy superpower while fighting climate change.”
He concluded by saying that his government will protect Canada’s workers and business and will build an independent future for “our great country”.
