A previous high-ranking Chinese government and party official has outed the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin as China’s favourite to become the next Pope. Du Wen described Cardinal Pietro Parolin as “pro-communist”.
This information was revealed by Du Wen, a Chinese Christian who once served as the legal advisor to China’s current Vice-Prime Minister, Hu Chunhua. Du Wen also served as the Executive Director of the Legal Advisory Office of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government in China. He was imprisoned for 12 years and 8 months in China for political reasons and now resides in Europe.
In 2018, Cardinal Pietro Parolin signed an agreement with China that regularised the Catholic bishops which the Chinese government had appointed. According to the agreement, China nominates its preferred bishops to the Vatican with the Pope having the last say from China’s approved list of nominees. The agreement was criticised by many for allowing China’s interference in Church matters.
The Vatican Conclave will start on May 7th to elect the new pope. Cardinal Pietro Parolin is currently listed as a favorite by bookmakers and betting platforms to become the next Pope.
