Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is recovering in the polls following recent events including threats by the US President to impose tariffs on Canada. Premier Trudeau’s upswing in the polls is being attributed to a wide resurgence of nationalism in Canada following President Trump’s attacks on Canada and his insistence to turn Canada into “the 51st State of the US”. Tariffs between the US and Canada have been postponed so far.
However, Premier Trudeau is set to resign on March 9th when the new Liberal Party leader is announced following internal elections. Premier Trudeau announced he would resign as leader and Prime Minister to help his party win the elections. There are six contenders for the Liberal Party’s leadership post, and none of them seem to be enjoying the Premier’s direct support. Premier Trudeau fell-out from his some of two most fellow loyalists who are contesting the post and it is unclear whether he is supporting them: these are former Canada’s Central Bank Governor Mark Carney, and previous Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
The other contenders include Karina Gould, former House Leader and the yougnest candidate at 37 years-old. Former MP and medical tech executive Frank Baylis. Former MP and businesswoman Ruby Dhalla, and Jaime Battiste, an MP from Nova Scotia with an Indigenous background.
