In a surprising news announced early this morning, the Republic of Chad has closed off its borders with Sudan after the Chadian army clashed with the Rapid Support Forces on the border town of Al-Tanila. This was the third clash between the Army of Chad and the RSF this year.
The border closure, just like the clashes, come as a significant surprise after the Chadian government supported the RSF over the years by allowing weapons transfer and deliveries imported from the United Arab Emirates by air into Sudan for the RSF. In the past, the Chadian Army even conducted border patrol operations along with the RSF. The Chadian government has always denied it is supporting the RSF but tensions with the Sudanese government were also high.
The border closure also comes after significant pressure on the UAE by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to cut weapons supplies to the RSF.
Although old weapons’ routes to the RSF are being closed, a new UAE weapons route to the RSF from the south of Sudan passing from Ethiopia has recently been identified.
