Hungary’s Special envoy for the Sahel, Máthé László Eduárd made a soft announcement that Hungarian troops are in Chad. The Hungarian troops are en-route to the Ivory Coast on a Hungarian military plane transporting both Chadian and Hungarian military officers. Along with the announcement that Hungarian troops are travelling to the Ivory Coast with Chadian troops, the Hungarian diplomat also announced that Hungary’s military cooperation Chad “is rolling out”.
Hungary has not yet officially announced that its troops are in Chad and this is the first admission by a Hungarian State official. Last month, The Maltese Herald revealed that Hungarian troops are already operating in Chad and even participated in a border-demarcation exercise with Chadian and Libyan troops from the Chadian border. Special Envoy Máthé László Eduárd described the story as “fake news”.
Hungarian troops are currently present in the Ivory Coast as part of a US Africa Command-led military exercise on a counter-terrorism mission described as “Flintlock”. The mission involves more than 500 troops from more than 30 countries and is scheduled to take place at the end of April 2025. Hungarian soldiers will be participating alongside their Chadian colleagues. Hungarian troops in Chad may already have trained their Chadian colleagues.
