A security operation by the Ukrainian Security Services uncovered and arrested two Hungarian spies in the Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia) Oblast of Ukraine, who were gathering data and intelligence for a potential Hungarian invasion of the Zakarpattia Oblast. Zakarpattia has an ethnic community of Hungarians and was occupied by Hungary in 1938 following the Treaty of Munich.
The Hungarian spies collected intelligence and data on military installations and bases, and studied how locals would react if Hungarian troops invaded the region. Hungary responded to the arrests by suspending two Ukrainian diplomats.
The suspects are a Hungarian security services officer who disguised himself as a caregiver and a retired servicewoman of the Ukrainian security services. Both of them were tasked to gather intelligence on Ukrainian’s defence including air-defence systems. The suspects are being charged with treason and can face a life in prison.
Hungary is a vocal Russian ally in the European Union and is currently conducting its own military and defence policies that do not necessarily align with NATO’s mission. Hungary is a NATO member but is currently conducting bilateral military cooperation with Serbia and also Chad.
