Youth and students took centre stage in Europe Day 2025 celebrations, as Malta joined the rest of the continent in marking the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration – the historic proposal that laid the groundwork for the European Union.

At Freedom Square in Valletta, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta hosted the final round of the European Parliament Ambassador Schools Programme Quiz. Ten secondary and post-secondary schools competed in a spirited contest, with Sacred Heart College emerging as the winner. The event was attended by Prime Minister Robert Abela, European Commissioner Glenn Micallef, and MEP Peter Agius, who visited the various EU information stands throughout the morning.

In a separate event at the University of Malta, MEPs Alex Agius Saliba (S&D) and Peter Agius (EPP) participated in a student debate organised with JEF Malta, the European Studies Organisation, and the Institute for European Studies. Despite belonging to different political groups, both MEPs underlined their shared focus on advancing Maltaโ€™s interests in the European Parliament.

Mario Sammut, Head of the European Parliament Office in Malta, highlighted the dayโ€™s significance: โ€œIt is important never to lose sight of the bigger pictureโ€ฆ the vision of the EUโ€™s founding fathers was ambitious, and the European Parliament continues to uphold those values.โ€

Similar Europe Day activities also took place last week in Gozo, organised with Europe Direct Gozo at Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria. The nationwide programme was coordinated with the European Commission Representation in Malta, Servizzi Ewropej fโ€™Malta (SEM), and other EU-linked entities.
