Jordan Azzopardi, known as the ‘El Chapo of Malta’, pleaded not guilty to arson charges after two vehicles were set on fire in Marsaskala on the 5th of March.
Emergency services were called to Triq il-Gardiel at around 3:15 am, where they found two parked vehicles engulfed in flames. CCTV footage linked a Peugeot 108, used by Azzopardi since November 2023, to the scene. Police noted similarities to a Żabbar arson case last November involving the same car.
Azzopardi was arrested on the 8th of March, with police seizing drugs, a loaded revolver, and €2,000 in cash. He faces multiple charges, including arson, firearm possession, and money laundering. Bail was not requested, and he remains in custody.
Magistrate Ian Farrugia is leading an inquiry, while Magistrate Charmaine Galea issued protection orders for the victims and froze Azzopardi’s assets.
Jordan Azzopardi, previously charged in 2019 for leading a nationwide drug operation, was represented by lawyers Franco Debono, Marion Camilleri, and Charles Mercieca. Prosecutors Daniel Tabone and Joseph Camilleri Azarov appeared for the Attorney General.
