During the ongoing probe into the theft of 226 kilograms of cannabis from the Armed Forces of Malta’s (AFM) Safi barracks, drugs have been seized at the residence of one of the suspects, 23-year-old Liam Steward from Pietà.
Steward was arrested on 25th February while driving in Ħamrun. He attempted to flee and rammed a van while doing so. A search of his vehicle and flat afterwards revealed three blocks of suspected drugs hidden in the engine room of the lift and other drugs, such as cannabis resin, in his flat. Paraphernalia related to drugs and €2,850 in cash were also seized by the authorities.
Forensic expert Godwin Sammut analysed the confiscated substances, identifying three kilograms of cannabis, 800 grams of THC, and 60 grams of cocaine. Steward is charged with drug trafficking, criminal association to traffic drugs, and possession of cannabis not for private use. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The stolen cannabis was initially seized by police in June at Malta Freeport and was stored in the Safi barracks as court evidence. The theft was discovered on 24th February.
Investigations are ongoing.
