Prime Minister Robert Abela deviated from European leaders in their messaging on the ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia, stating that “peace is always achieved through diplomacy, not through the barrel of a gun.”
What I find offensive in this nonsensical and rhetorical statement, purely intended to ingratiate with President Donald Trump, is that the Prime Minister doesn’t believe in his own words and doesn’t apply what he says.
Our society is still divided with the literal bombing of a journalist in 2017 with justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia still pending. The Prime Minister has only exacerbated the rule of law crisis and has only stoked further divisions with his attacks against civil society and the press that expects the restoration of rule of law. If you can’t bring peace at home, how do you expect to be a peacemaker abroad?
