European leaders have come out in support of the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United for Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine acceptd the US proposal for a 30 day ceasefire agreement with Russia. A mineral rights deal with the US is also being concluded. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that US military aid has already resumed.
Following the talks with the Ukrainian delegation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Ukraine accepted the US proposal for Ukraine to enter into negotiations to end the war in Ukraine in a way that is sustainable, enduring and accounts of their interests.
The United States is expecting Ukraine to cede its territory to Russia for a peace agreement but Ukraine is against this proposal. Ukraine was invaded by Russia in 2022 and has so far occupied up to 20% of its territory. Russia also invaded Ukraine and occupied Crimea in 2014.
There has been yet been no response from Russia about the ceasefire proposal. European leaders took a cue from the US Secretary’s statement and said that “the ball is in Russia’s court”.
