President Trump expects Russia to accept ceasefire: promises new sanctions if it doesn’t

President Trump described the ceasefire proposal agreed to by Ukraine as “a great success” and expressed hope that Russia would accept it. However, Russia has so far refused the U.S. proposal, stating that it will be “studying it.” European leaders also expect Russia to accept the US proposal.

Before entering the Oval Office, President Trump said that Ukraine’s policy is very different from the last time President Zelensky visited the White House saying that Ukraine is determined for a complete ceasefire. President Trump also said that he could add new sanctions to Russia if it doesn’t accept the ceasefire proposal, however he added that his administration has a very good relationship with Russia.

Russia has made new territorial gains in the war against Ukraine by recapturing Kursk following the temporary US pause of weapons and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Ukraine is pushing further back against the Russian frontlines in Toretsk and Pokrovsk.
