The group stage of the Under-18 European Snooker Junior Championship concluded on Wednesday in Antalya, Turkey, with Maltese player Jake Castaldi securing his spot in the knockout rounds. After reaching the last 16 in the Under-16 category earlier in the week, Castaldi continued his strong form by progressing beyond the group stage and advancing to the last 32 of the Under-18 competition.
On Tuesday, Castaldi faced a decisive group-stage match after recording both a win and a loss earlier in the tournament. His qualification depended not only on his own performance but also on the result between the other two competitors in his group. Facing Italyโs Geremia Orsi in his final group match, Castaldi initially struggled as Orsi took the first two frames. However, the determined young Maltese player mounted an impressive comeback, winning three consecutive frames to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory. The frame scores were: 59-70, 28-65, 65-22, 64-63, 59-9.
As the only Maltese player to advance beyond the group stage, Castaldi had little time to rest before facing Armeniaโs Mikayel Nersisyan in the knockout phase later that night. He started strong, winning the first two frames, but Nersisyan responded by taking the third. Castaldi regained control in the fourth frame, securing a 3-1 victory with frame scores of 54-47, 71-41, 21-58, 73-32.
Next Challenge: A Spot in the Last 16
Jake Castaldiโs next match will be an early morning showdown at 8:00 AM (Malta time) against Walesโ Tyler McCaffrey-Smith. Interestingly, McCaffrey-Smith had previously defeated Jakeโs brother, Chaylon Castaldi, during the group stage. As the group winner, McCaffrey-Smith had qualified directly to the last 32, making this a challenging encounter for Jake.
Other Maltese Players Show Promise in Group Stage
While Jake Castaldi was the only Maltese player to progress, the remaining young Maltese competitors displayed solid performances in their final group matches. Both Chaylon Castaldi and Xavier Rizzo secured convincing 3-0 victories. Chaylon defeated Northern Irelandโs Will Taylor with frame scores of 61-50, 74-8, 59-22, while Xavier Rizzo overcame Turkeyโs รmer Can Biltir 43-38, 50-39, 84-21. Earlier, Rizzo had suffered a loss to Walesโ Riley Powell.
Caiden Casha also put up a strong fight against Walesโ Jack Taylor. After leading 2-1, he was on the verge of victory in the fourth frame, only for Taylor to pot the final black ball and win the frame by a single point (36-37). Taylor then claimed the deciding frame, ultimately securing the win.
A Valuable Experience for Youngest Maltese Competitor
Twelve-year-old Gregory Cachia, the youngest Maltese competitor, gained valuable experience despite suffering two defeats. He lost 3-0 to Walesโ Sion Stuart but showed resilience in his second match against Finlandโs Eino Vuoristo. Cachia won the opening frame before eventually falling to a 3-1 defeat. As he will not be competing in the Under-21 category starting on Friday, his journey in the tournament ends here.
As the competition continues, all eyes will be on Jake Castaldi as he aims for a place in the last 16 of the Under-18 European Snooker Championship.
