Alex Agius Saliba explains his position on yesterday’s votes

Yesterday, the Labour Party’s MEPs voted against the ReArm programme in the European Parliament. In my writings, I also accused Alex Agius Saliba of favouring Russia’s foreign policy and being aligned with the far-right. This was his response that he sent me.

“I voted against the ReArm programme not because I am pro-Russia, but because I was always against war and the weapons industry. With regard to the vote on Ukraine, I voted against because the resolution obliges member states to provide weaponry to Ukraine.”

Alex Agius Saliba is correct when saying that an article in the resolution states that EU member coutnries should increase their military aid to Ukraine, but article 6 also clearly implies that EU Member States that are neutral should increase aid to Ukraine according to their constitutional provisions. It says, “notes in this context that a number of EU Member States are non-aligned and urges them to increase their support for Ukraine in line with their constitutions.”

Clearly, the provision that Alex Agius Saliba is referring to, does not go against Malta’s constitution and neither does it compel Malta to provide military aid to Ukraine. The full text can be found here.

Labour Party politicians are increasingly supporting foreign policy positions similar to Hungary and in favour of Russia. They are also constantly attacking the European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
