Alex Agius Saliba’s position about defence is aligned with the pro-Russian far-right

Alex Agius Saliba has taken the pro-Russian position on European defense: that is the position that Europe should remain defenseless against Russian aggression and give up its national security. There is no other way you can describe a position against European re-armament.

Alex Agius Saliba is against the latest EU Commission proposed package to induce a surge in defence spending in Europe. Note, that this spending will mostly be spent in Europe creating jobs and investment opportunities in Europe. Malta can take opportunity from this package to build its own defence industry and create a new economic sector. Government defence expenditure will be exempt from the Excessive-Deficit-Procedure making it an opportunity to create jobs at a very low economic risk.

I didn’t expect anything from the same politician who constantly defends Malta’s most corrupt politician history, and bangs at the tables of the Labour Party Headquarters saying that Labour should be even more aggressive against its critics.

Alex Agius Saliba has no compunction about lying and spreading populist talking points to achieve his votes. The “We should invest in welfare and not defence” is a nonsensical Russian talking-point that the Russian government actively spreads through its media and propogandists in Europe. This is not new. For many years, the Soviet Union also spread this kind of propaganda as it built the biggest nuclear stockpile in history.

Alex Agius Saliba is taking the same position of the European pro-Russian far-right. There’s nothing socialist about giving up your democracy to a totalitarian state, but the Labour Party is losing most of its democratic values and spreading deceitful Russian propaganda has become acceptable. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that in Malta we don’t have a resurgence in the far-right within opposition politics, because the far-right is already in government. It is also no coincidence that the same politicians who advocate for organised crime, and don’t mind having our military humiliated by a gang of young drug-sellers, don’t want Malta and Europe to be secure from foreign threats.
