Alfred Bugeja, more commonly known by his nickname ‘Il-Porporina’, passed away earlier today, at the age of 66, just two weeks after his release from prison.
He had been residing in a care home for the elderly, where he died from complications related to his ongoing health issues.
Bugeja’s life was deeply intertwined with crime, beginning at the young age of 16 when he received his first prison sentence. Over the years, he spent most of his life behind bars, convicted of numerous offences, including drug trafficking, theft, and attempted robbery.
Despite his notorious reputation, Bugeja claimed in an interview last year, when he was out on parole, that both his criminal record and his nickname had led him to suffer harsher consequences than he truly deserved.
However, in his later years, he also sought to serve as a cautionary example to others, particularly young people, warning them not to follow the same destructive path.
