European Small Nations Weightlifting Championships in Malta

The European Small Nations Championship and the Malta International Open 2025 will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of March at the newly Weightlifting Training and Competition Centre within the Marsa Sport Complex. This prestigious event will bring together elite weightlifters from 15 countries, showcasing their strength and skill at an international level. The general public is invited to attend and support Malta’s athletes as they compete on home soil.

The competition kicks off on the 22nd of March with a full day of weightlifting action starting at 9:30. The event will feature men’s and women’s sessions across various weight categories, promising an exciting weekend of top-tier competition.

50th anniversary of weightlifting in Malta

Before the evening events, the Opening Ceremony will be held at 14:00, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Malta Weightlifting This will be highlighting the significance of this championship for both local and international weightlifting.

Among the first Maltese athletes to compete will be European Union Silver medallist Nathan Mifsud, representing Team Malta at 11:30. Later in the afternoon, European Junior Bronze medallist Kim Camilleri Lagana will step onto the platform at 15:00.

The action continues on the 23rd of March with more thrilling matchups featuring some of Malta’s top lifters. European Junior Champion Tenishia Thornton, a veteran weightlifter, will compete at 11:30 alongside Roberta Tabone. Later in the day, at 14:00 PM, one of Malta’s most promising male athletes, Rylee Borg, will aim to cement his status on the national and international stage. He will be joined by Vlad Baldacchino as they take on strong international competitors.

A significant milestone for Maltese weightlifting

This championship marks a significant milestone for Maltese weightlifting. This is as it will be hosted in the newly built Weightlifting Training and Competition Hall in the Marsa Sport Complex. The Malta Weightlifting Association extends its gratitude to SportMalta for its support in constructing this state-of-the-art facility. It should serve as a vital center for the sport’s development.

With over 125 participants, the European Small Nations Championship and Malta International Open 2025 promise to be an unmissable event for sports enthusiasts. Malta will compete against Iceland, Cyprus, San Marino, Luxembourg, Monaco, and the Faroe Islands in the Small Nations category. The International Open will see Maltese athletes take on competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Romania, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium.

The event will also welcome high-profile figures in the weightlifting world. These include the President and General Secretary of the International Weightlifting Federation, the President and General Secretary of the European Weightlifting Federation, and several national federation presidents from across Europe.
