Remembering Fish and BNI

I was genuinely surprised to discover that the latest Podcast hit in Malta, Bajd u Bacon, interviewed Stefan Dimech, popularly known as “Il-Fish”. This podcast episode serves as a valuable feature on Malta’s cultural history. Malta’s professional artists are deeply underappreciated, yet they provide value to Maltese society that is of national importance.

Fish, who was known for his punk image right in front of Law Courts selling his hand-made jewelry, was a well-rounded artist and craftsman. The podcast is an interesting listen, as it tells his story of how he made a living selling his own crafts and jewelry. There are also mentions to Malta’s foremost tattoo artists such as “Il-Bobby” and “Tony Zalzettu”.

Fish was also known by many as the lead-singer of the punk bank, Batteries Not Included (BNI). BNI was Malta’s most popular punk band for a long time after Abstrass, which was probably Malta’s leading punk band in the 1980s followed by RAS in the nineties. BNI’s hit “Qrunha f’Butha” was Malta’s most popular song for some time, with their hit-album, Ilsien Pajjiลผiย released in 1999.
