Protests erupted in scale yesterday in Tel Aviv as Israelis protested the renewal of the war on Gaza and the continued descent of rule-of-law by the Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Protests in Tel Aviv started earlier this week by the relatives of the Israeli hostages who are still in Gaza. Protesters tried to block roads and held images of Palestinian children from Gaza who were killed by Israel’s airstrikes last week.
Israel unilaterally withdrew from the ceasefire agreement with Hamas and renewed its war against Gaza. Up to 500 people including 200 children were reported to have been killed by Israeli airstrikes and shelling, according to UNICEF.
Israelis are also protesting the Israeli government’s expulsion of Shin Bet head Ronen Bar. Prime Minister Netanyahu insists that Bar was fired for failing to inform the government about the October 7th attacks and other shortcomings. However, protesters believe the government dismissed him due to Shin Bet’s ongoing investigations into alleged illicit payments from Qatar to Premier Netanyahu and his officials.
