Protests continue in Turkey: Elon Musk blocks Turkish Opposition accounts on X.com for the second time

Protests have continued during the weekend in Ankara and Istanbul in Turkey over the detention of Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. He was arrested on corruption charges and aiding the PKK, but Turkish citizens accuse the government of clamping down on the Opposition. Ekrem Imamoglu was earmarked as the main potential Opposition contender for the Turkish presidential elections. This is not the first time that President Tayyip Erdogan arrested and detained his political opponents, journalists, students and Kurdish politicians.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s X.com platform is banning accounts of Turkish students and opposition activists who are posting content related to the protests in Turkey. This is not the first time that X.com has acceded to the requests of the Turkish authorities to ban opposition accounts on X.com. During the run-off of the last presidential election in Turkey in 2023, X.com banned a swathe of Turkish opposition accounts. In 2023, Elon Musk defended this position by saying that their (X.com) options were, either to accede to the requests of the Turkish authorities, or have Twitter banned altogether from Turkey.
