Malta national team to face Poland tonight

Malta national team head coach Emilio De Leo and midfielder Teddy Teuma addressed the media during the MD-1 press conference ahead of their clash against Poland. Reflecting on their recent performance against Finland, De Leo acknowledged the team’s progress but emphasized the need for further improvements in key areas.

The coach praised the strong display against Finland but stressed that while the team should be proud, they must also recognize the disappointment of not securing a positive result. He pointed out that enhancing finishing and making defensive adjustments are crucial steps forward.

Squad Fitness and Selection Challenges

With tonightโ€™s training session being the first since Fridayโ€™s match, De Leo stated that he will only be able to fully assess the players’ conditions afterward. However, according to the medical staff, the squad appears to be in good shapeโ€”except for Kurt Shaw, who will miss the match following a red card against Finland. This absence adds to the selection challenges, but the coach commended the teamโ€™s enthusiasm and determination.

โ€œWhen goals are conceded and defeats happen, they provide an opportunity to analyse mistakes and learn from them,โ€ De Leo remarked, underlining his philosophy of continuous improvement.

Respect for Poland but Focus on Performance

Discussing Poland as an opponent, De Leo refrained from making judgments but acknowledged their strength, experience, and ranking. He highlighted the quality of Polandโ€™s squad, with many players competing in top leagues.

โ€œWe know there will be difficulties, but we must turn them into opportunities. Poland will want to improve their performance, but achieving a good result in this group is always challenging,โ€ he added.

Teuma: Confidence and Intensity the Key Differences

Midfielder Teddy Teuma echoed the sentiment of progress, noting that Malta showed more confidence in their last match. He pointed out that playing with personality was the biggest difference, and he had no regrets about the team’s effort against Finland.

โ€œThe main change was our intensity, and it was great to experience. We felt more confident, and thatโ€™s a step forward for us,โ€ Teuma said.

Kick-Off at Stadion Narodowy

Malta will face Poland later tonight in a WC 2026 European Qualifying match at the Stadion Narodowy, with kick-off scheduled for 20:45 CET.
