In leaked chats published by The Atlantic, the US Vice-President JD Vance and the US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared their hatred for Europe as they accused it of “free-loading”. It is unclear to what they have been referring to exactly.
President Trump has been repeatedly stating that the US donated up to $300 billion to Ukraine, but the actual figure is at around $120 billion, and potentially much less when calculating the aid at real market rates.
US weapons exports to Europe more than doubled since 2015 with NATO members purchasing most of their weapons from the US. This is about to change as European countries plan to redirect weapons purchases to their own industries.
The chat was leaked accidentally to The Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg as the US Vice-President and the Defense Secretary planned to launch an attack on the Houthis in Yemen. The US attacks on Houthi military targets took place on March 15th. The editor was added to the chat by accident.
When asked about the chats President Trump said he knew nothing about them and said that The Atlantic is a failing publication.
