The German Foreign Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock have poured cold water over Turkey’s recent proposals to join the European Union as it condemned the arrest of Istanbul’s Mayor and Opposition figure Ekrem Imamoglu. The German Foreign Office stated that “Political competitors do not belong in prison or before the courts” and that a country that envisions its future in the EU must uphold the rule of law.
Recently, Turkey made its demand to join the EU in meetings held with the European pro-Ukrainian coalition as it pitched its security guarantees for Ukraine, including by providing its soldiers as part of Europe’s potential peace-keeping mission to Ukraine.
Protests in Turkey over the detention of Ekrem Imamoglu have continued today in many universities across different cities.
