Currently, Edward Zammit Lewis and Adrian Delia are representing Malta at the The Inter-Parliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy, in Warsaw. The meeting is being held under the auspices of the Polish EU Presidency in conjunction with COSAC which Edward Zammit Lewis seems to be a member. COSAC is the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union. I did not understand so far why Adrian Delia was present, however it is common to have a representative of the Opposition in these international parliamentary events.
In line with his own party, Edward Zammit Lewis used his trip for propaganda purposes aimed at Labour audiences. He said he went there to preach the foreigners about peace. Malta he added, is the best interlocutor for peace.
This is the kind of framing that Labour MPs are using to convey European defence issues to their electorate. Labour MPs are trying to take the high-ground over “European warmongers” because supposedly they support peace. The discourse and rhetoric at home are the same as those of the far right. This is also exactly the narrative of Russian propaganda that is constantly and daily spread through Russian sources. Some of them can’t even make this distinction between what the Prime Minister is conveying abroad and what he is saying at home, so they are genuinely asking why Malta doesn’t adopt Hungary’s foreign policy position.
On a more general note, we are being represented abroad, on serious issues, by our Parliament’s biggest fools. Had Alex Agius Saliba joined the party, they would have collected a very good set.
