Drama erupted over a controversial goal that was scored by Hamrun goalkeeper Henry Bonello against Naxxar Lions in yesterday’s final Malta Premier League encounter.
As can be clearly seen from the video posted here, the ball was carried by the strong wind.
As expected, social media was abuzz with criticism directed at Naxxar Lions’ reserve goalkeeper, Andre Fenech, who stepped in for the suspended first-choice keeper, Matthias Debono, in today’s match against Ħamrun Spartans.
With Fenech between the posts, Naxxar Lions fell to a 4-0 defeat. One of the goals came from an own goal by one of his teammates, while another was a powerful long-range strike from the opposing goalkeeper, Henry Bonello. Assisted by the wind and Fenech’s inexperience, the 23-year-old Naxxar shot-stopper was caught out of position, and the ball ended up in the net.
