Russia comes to Marine Le Pen’s defence

Following yesterday’s court conviction which barred her from elections for five years, Marine Le Pen received  the support of her previous backer and financier: Russia. In 2014 the Kremlin loaned Marine Le Pen’s party, Front National, up to €9.4 million.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that her conviction and ban from elections constitute “a violation of democratic norms.” Vladimir Putin regularly jails and kills his opponents with the latest opponent jailed and killed being Alexei Navalny.

President Donald Trump also came to Marine Le Pen’s defence saying he has a similar experience to her given his previous court cases. Donald Trump was found guilty of rape. In a separate case, he was also found guilty of violating campaign finance laws when he paid a pornstar as hush-money. He was also battling a case on financial fraud related to his declarations and valuations of his assets.

Marine Le Pen said she was outraged, but the case gives a stronger driving force to fight on. Marine Le Pen’s party National Rally embezzled up to €2.9 million from the European Parliament with her personally embezzling up to €474,000.
