Protests in Georgia on the 34th year anniversary of its independence referendum

Yesterday, Georgians held protests in front of Parliament and Rustaveli Avenue whilst also commemorating the the 34th year anniversary of its independence referendum. The previous President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili also address protesters.

On March 31 1991, Georgians voted in a referendum on a question that said: “Do you agree or disagree with restoring Georgia’s state independence based on the Act of May 26, 1918?”. 98.9% of Georgians answered “Yes” and Georgia declared its independence from the Soviet Union in the following week.

The Ruling-Party Georgian Dream held power after rigging the elections but protestors have kept their pressure by gathering in front of Parliament on a regular basis. The Georgian Dream ruling-party is also trying to clamp down on the opposition through various laws, including the introduction of a Russian law, and is now attempting to ban one of Georgia’s main opposition parties.
