President Macron appeals for European collective solidarity: asks to halt all French investments in the US

In response to the sweeping US tariffs announced earlier this week, French President Emmanuel Macron held an emergency meeting with the French business community in the Élysée Palace where he appealed for collective solidarity and asked the French business community to halt all investments in the US before the trade dispute with the US is resolved.

President Macron said that Europe could dismantle US tariffs if Europeans worked together and described the US tariffs as cruel and unfounded. He also said that tariffs will drive Europe to export mort to Asia while the US economy and consumer will become poorer.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever echoed the French President’s words and described the US tariffs as “wealth-destroying protectionist madness”. He also appealed to Europe not to retaliate in kind saying that Europe should respond to stupidity with further stupidity.

The European Union has not retaliated against the newly imposed US tariffs but the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Europe has several measures prepared that could be effected if ongoing negotiations fail. Unconfirmed reports state that European measures can be targeted at specific industries and specific US states to specifically hurt the political base of President Trump.
