Prison Chief Chris Siegersma wants a civilian as the prison’s Chief of Operations, and he may very well get his way as Colonel Etienne Scicluna is to be recalled to the Armed Forces of Malta for a promotion in a planned reshuffle of the top leadership of the Armed Forces of Malta.
Chris Siegersma, who previously worked as a senior nursing officer at Malta’s mental health hospital, was appointed as prison chief following the resignation of his predecessor Robert Brincau. He is a friend of the Home Affairs Ministers but was also particularly selected in an attempt to bring a more civilian approach to prison affairs that contrasted with the leadership of previous prison chief Colonel Alex Dalli. There were also rumours that Colonel Etienne Scicluna intended to replace Chris Siegersma, but Chris Siegersma denied them.
Appointing another Colonel to prison role is currently also being opposed by several insiders at the Ministry of Home Affairs who criticise this move as unnecessary following the controversy behind Colonel Alex Dalli’s leadership of the prison.
