“Walter Bloomberg” saves the stock market: fake news tweet on tariffs suspension followed by $2.5 trillion swing in the S&P500

A popular financial news account on X.com (Twitter), with over 800,000 followers and operating under the pseudonym “Walter Bloomberg” that uses a photo of Russian actor Vyacheslav Shatnenko, tweeted a fake news item claiming that President Trump was considering a 90-day suspension of the tariffs he announced last week. The tweet was followed by a 6% move in the S&P500 equivalent to around $2.5 trillion but the move receded as people slowly realised that the story was untrue.

The account called Walter Bloomberg uses various news feeds such as Reuters and Bloomberg to relay news instantly. It is widely used by the online financial community.

The S&P500 closed at 5062.25 and 0.23% down from last week’s close.During the market open, the S&P 500 rebounded from its losses in the Asian trading hours.
