Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando was unanimously approved by Parliament as Malta’s Ambassador to Rwanda, with the Opposition supporting this appointment. He will be a non-resident ambassador, living in Malta, thus giving the appearance that it’s a token role rather than actually something tangible. Nonetheless, the Opposition would have done the right thing by opposing the nomination.
Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando is a dentist and a political hack, and has got nothing to do with the Foreign Affairs Department. There are plenty of highly qualified diplomats in the department who could have taken on the role instead of him, but the Prime Minister and his Deputy and Foreign Affairs Minister are still keen on making a mockery of our diplomatic service by using it to reward their political hacks: this is becoming the rule under this adminiustration.
Note that Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s political allegiance is, of course, aligned with the Labour-leaning faction of the Nationalist Party: the one that has no issue with the government’s corruption and the fire-sale of public assets to political donors. Recently, he has also been praising Dom Mintoff’s foreign policy including his relationship with Mao Tse-tung. Apparently, the Nationalist Party’s foreign policy has changed: unofficially?
