Dutch politician Pieter Omtzigt announced his retirement from politics citing health-issues from burn-out. He is the founder of the Christian-Democrat, New Social Contract party, founded in August 2023, which had split from the Christian Democratic Appeal. The party is currently in a coalition government and is the third-biggest political party in parliament with 20 seats.
The leadership of his party is now under his deputy, Nicolien van Vroonhoven. This is not the first time that Pieter Omtzigt complained of health issues.
Pieter Omtzigt is 51-years old and is known for his advocacy for whistleblowers and his fight against corruption in politics. He was a major political advocate for a public inquiry into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and pressured the Maltese government through the Council of Europe to enact the inquiry. The inquiry eventually concluded that the Maltese State enabled and created the conditions for the murder of the journalist.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and other politicians expressed their respect for Pieter Omtzigt and acknowledged his positive political legacy.
