European leaders have joined the global chorus of mourning following the death of Pope Francis, lauding him as a moral compass whose influence extended far beyond the walls of the Vatican.
President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, offered a heartfelt tribute to a leader she described as “The People’s Pope”:
“Europe mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.
His contagious smile captured millions of people’s hearts across the globe.
‘The People’s Pope’ will be remembered for his love for life, hope for peace, compassion for equality & social justice.
May he rest in peace.”
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasised the Pope’s broad appeal and his unwavering focus on the marginalised:
“Today, the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis.
He inspired millions, far beyond the Catholic Church, with his humility and love so pure for the less fortunate.
My thoughts are with all who feel this profound loss.
May they find solace in the idea that Pope Francis’ legacy will continue to guide us all toward a more just, peaceful and compassionate world.”
Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, was widely respected in EU circles for his outspoken stance on climate change, migration, social inequality, and peace. His moral leadership resonated with secular and religious communities alike, securing his place as a powerful advocate for dignity, unity, and reform in a divided world.
As tributes continue to pour in, his legacy is being remembered not only within the Church, but as a spiritual and ethical beacon for all of Europe and beyond.
