Malta is mourning the loss of Pope Francis, whose passing at the age of 88 has sparked an outpouring of emotion from across the island. Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech were among the first to honour the late pontiff, recalling not only his global influence but also his deeply personal connection with the Maltese people during his 2022 apostolic visit.
Pope Francis visited Malta from the 2nd to 3rd April 2022, under the theme โThey showed us unusual kindnessโ, inspired by Acts 28:2 – a reference to the shipwreck of Saint Paul on Maltaโs shores. During his two-day trip, the Pope met with national leaders, led prayer at Taโ Pinu Shrine in Gozo, visited migrants in ฤฆal Far, and celebrated Mass in Floriana, drawing tens of thousands.
Prime Minister Robert Abela praised the Popeโs dedication to peace and reform:
โPope Francis was a powerful voice for peace and the most vulnerable. He continued to advocate for peace up until just yesterday.
The social themes he brought to the forefront and the reforms he implemented within the Catholic Church mark an important pontificate.
Our country had the privilege of welcoming him, and it was a wonderful occasion for our people, who gave this humble Pope a warm welcome wherever he went.
On a personal level, the meetings we had as a family will remain a beautiful memory.
On behalf of the Maltese Government, I pay tribute to Pope Francis and extend condolences to the Vatican State.โ
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech echoed those sentiments, emphasising the Popeโs humility and moral leadership:
โWith great sadness we receive the news of the death of Pope Francis, a shepherd of peace, humility and mercy.
His wisdom, profound humanity and love touched the hearts of many, including us Maltese.
May he rest in eternal peace.โ
President Myriam Spiteri Debono also paid tribute, highlighting Pope Francisโ global and humanitarian legacy:
โPope Francis will be remembered for his humility, the particular attention he gave during his term to the poor and marginalised, as well as his continuous work for international peace and reconciliation between peoples,โ stated President Myriam Spiteri Debono.
Archbishop Charles Scicluna also issued a statement, joining the global mourning:
โThe Church in Malta joins the rest of the Catholic World and all persons of good will to grieve the death of His Holiness Pope Francis and to commend him to the Mercy of God of which he was a compassionate witness. May he rest in peace.โ
The 2022 papal visit is remembered as a moment of unity, faith, and national pride – a legacy that will endure in Maltaโs collective memory long after his passing.
