The USS Mount Whitney, the command ship of the Sixth Fleet has arrived in Benghazi after visiting the Port of Tripoli. US Vice-Admiral Jeffrey T. Anderson is onboard the ship and is meeting with both Libyan leaders and high-level security officials to discuss security issues and unification efforts.
The US visit is taking place as the US government cuts funding for security and intelligence programmes in the Mediterranean in what it is describing as a reprioritisation efforts. The visit also takes place in the backdrop of serious security issues in Libya including widespread human trafficking and slavery that is still ongoing in the southern parts of Libya.
